Start Your Holiday Season Off WALKING!

It’s in the air- the smells of chocolate, turkey, ham, pies, cakes, and that oh so yummy eggnog. It has arrived.. The Holiday Season off to get you in the thighs, the rear, and that part of your arm that keeps on waving even when you stopped!

Our favorite healthy living program was created right here in the Pittsburgh area by New Castle native, Leslie Sansone. I had the privileged to meet Leslie in person a year ago at a taping of the Jennifer show. Leslie is even more uplifting and motivating in person then on the videos. She really makes you want to get up and move, to try harder and experience that nirvana when you step on the scale and you’ve lost 5 lbs. The best feeling is when you put on your ‘fat jeans’ and they really are fat- they swallow you up!

In today’s society it’s not just the adults that are struggling with needle on the scale, but our kids too. With computers, video games, and just laziness our kids have gone from fun outdoor loving to using up all oxygen resources in their bedrooms.

So today I urge you to step away from the computer. Turn off the TV’s, video games…and step outside. Even just a walk down the street and back or around the block will get the blood cells flowing again. Don’t use the weather as an excuse! Turn up the radio and just DANCE. Dance with your kids for a half an hour- then come back after your shower cause you will work up a sweat and enter to win a Walk At Home DVD!

I DVR everything so I have the luxury of fast forwarding during commercials but I find if while watching my favorite show I “get up and move” during the commercials it motivates me to get some exercise in. I also enjoy watching Ellen Degeneres and dancing with her! If I really like the song I just keep rewinding!

I do squats and leg lifts after I use the bathroom, while I am washing/drying my hands. It gets the blood flowing and uses those big muscle groups, plus it makes you wash your hands longer – probably a good thing during cold season!

I set up my iPod with favourite “serial” podcasts that I know I won’t have time to listen to if I sleep in and skip my walk. I do different distances as I train, so my iPod is set up accordingly. If I miss a day, everything is thrown off.

Second tip: My computer has a little timer thing that pauses whatever I’m doing every hour and suggests I go get a glass of water, and move. Very helpful for long days on the computer. Get one here: http://tinyurl.com/6eegha

We live in a 2 story house so I use those stair as much as possible. I have 3 children so trying lay on the floor for crunches can turn into Mom the jungle gym, so I sneak into the living room for a few minutes while they are occupied w/ lunch or playdough.

  7. Kristin says:

We live close by stores, so whenever possible I try and walk to do my errands.

When I get home from work, I don’t sit down until it’s time for bed.

I have a few shows that are “must sees” for me each week. So during commercials I do jumping jacks and squats and try to do sit-ups while watching television. It beats sitting on the couch doing nothing! m_huston(at)hotmail(dot)com

I have a hard time getting motivated, so I invite a friend and we have a blast talking and walking in our neighborhood. Before we know it, we’ve walked 3-4 miles.

I just got the Wii Fit bundle at our house and I love it. I have it near my laundry room so I can do fun exercises while I am getting some laundry done as well!

We clean the house as a family and we turn up the music and get moving to it! We also like to hike the civil war battlegrounds too!

I have been known to run on the treadmill from time to time, but really dont stick with it as much as I should.

  18. I get up and move by belonging to a gym with childcare. :) I tell people that my workouts are as important to my brain as they are to my body.

I dance with my 2yo while carrying my 4 month old in her Baby Bjorn. Gets the toddler’s energy out and the baby provides strength training :)

  22. I walk around the block at work. Each lap is 4/10s of a mile. If I do 5, I get 5 miles in.
