How To Wear A Moby® Wrap: Best Baby Carrier for Newborns

Posted by in Bringing Up Boys

best baby carrier for newbornsI think that one of the most confusing types of baby carriers is the one long piece of fabric style, however it’s the best baby carrier for newborns. One of the most popular brands of these carrier styles is the Moby® Wrap. I personally used a Moby® Wrap for the first several months of my middle son’s life – it saved me from many tired days and nights!

I remember one of the first days he was home from the hospital and I had him in the Moby® Wrap and I honestly forgot that I had him. It wasn’t until he started to cry that I was reminded that I in fact had a newborn baby – both him and I were that comfortable!

Here is a great video on how to do a front belly-to-belly hold with the Moby® Wrap:

So you can see how these are the best baby carrier for newborns with the numerous ways to hold a baby and how snug they are when chest to chest. One of my favorite online parenting shops, Mom 4 Life, has a number of the wrap style baby carriers in their shop.

They’re definitely something that takes some getting used to, but so worth it once you figure it out. We did a lot of traveling when my little man was a baby, and this was great to pack in the diaper bag for mall trips and walking around the airport. Definitely a must have for babies in my opinion!

  46. That’s great that you can cover their head with part of it too :)

  47. I’ve read a lot of places that the Moby wrap is “everyone”‘s favorite for a newborn. Since #2 is on the way, I’ll have to test this!

  48. I was intimidated by the moby when my son was born (went with a k’tan, instead), but I am determined to master the Moby with the next baby! Come on 2013!! ;)

  57. I LOVE my Moby Wrap! And so does my hubby! :) It is amazing how we can have a fussy baby, put them in there and then they go right to sleep and are happy and content as can be. I just LOVE them! I love the material, the different colors, the support and versatility.

  58. I love stretchy wraps for babies. I don’t have a Moby but I have a Sleepy wrap which is just like it.

  59. I have a MOBY and a ton of more experienced baby wearing mommas said not to get one due to it being so stretchy it supposedly isn’t good after baby reaches about 16lbs, but my 9m old is 25lbs ish and we LOVE our Moby! Just wish it would hold my 30lb 2yr old, too stretchy for his weight.

  60. I must admit, I am not a big wrap fan. They are nice at home, but getting it on when I am out is too hard. Especially while trying to keep my 2yo from running off!!! I prefer a ring sling for my NB. :)

  61. I must admit, I am not a wrap fan. I had issues trying to get it on while out and about. It isn’t too bad at home, but I prefer my ring sling for my NB.

  62. The Moby saved my sanity with my little guy! It was my gateway carrier and still my go-to when my four-month-old needs a nap and mama needs to get cleaning done!

  63. I am not a fan of the Moby Wrap, I really wanted to love it but….
I am tiny! (4ft 11in and 100lbs) This wrap is not meant for people so small. Way too much fabric to actually wear it and be comfortable. The fabric was also very stiff! My son didn’t like either. I was pretty disappointmented all in all.

    • Did you try any of the wrapping tutorials for petite women? I know that they also have a wrap meant for us vertically challenged people with less fabric – may be worth another try!

  64. I loved the twins pic! How adorable!!!

  65. I had a Moby, but I feel like I missed the window for using it because DD was big and she hated the newborn hold options. We’ve tried it a few times since, but now at 11 months old, she’s ready for a big girl carrier =) I’m still holding on the Moby for future babies.

  66. thanks for the review. i can never seem to see what the weight limit for a Moby is? my little one is getting not so little ;)

    • Do not quote me but I believe it’s similar to other carriers of around 35lbs. Typically until it’s uncomfortable for you and baby is the limit :)

  67. Great advise about this being perfect for newborns; I appreciate that!

  68. Nice tandem-wearing with the Moby!

  69. Love my Moby Wrap. I never got the hang of it with my twins but use it all the time with my 9 month old.

  74. I have a moby and it’s the only way I can cook dinner some nights. Wonderful!

  75. When my son (who is now 3yr) was an infant, I wore him EVERYWHERE in our Moby. I gave it to a friend when he outgrew it and… oops, had another baby when he was 2.5yr! I miss my Moby sometimes. :P

  76. i loved our moby wrap while my son was smaller as well- i was very intimidated by the wrapping aspect of it but after just a few times it was easy as pie and was such a life-saver!! i don’t know how i would have gotten anything done without it! :D i am keeping it for all future kiddos! :)

  77. I need one of these sooo baaad!!!

  78. I second how comfortable the Moby wrap is! Great for newborn wearing!

    • LOVE that! I actually stopped people at a convention center asking them about their baby carriers right before I had my second son. They were all so excited to tell me all about that carrier and all the other ones in their collection!

  87. New to baby wearing have to say the Moby was my first and i do enjoy wearing it with my newest little one

  97. can’t wait to use it on the next baby :-)

  98. Can’t wait to try my Moby wrap after my son is born!

  99. Wraps look so complicated and intimidating. How long is the learning curve on one?

    • As I’ve mentioned in some of the other comments it was about two weeks of practicing with a teddy bear to really get the whole process down pat to where I could put it on and baby in it in less than a minute.

  100. i would have never thought of wearing twins! what a great product that you can do that!

  101. My daughter and I both love wearing my new granddaughter in the Moby!!

  102. I have to be honest, it took some patience and perseverance getting used to moby at first, but I find it super easy and comfortable for mom and baby now.

  105. That is so cool that you can use this with twins. I really want a moby for my next little newborn.

  106. GREAT REVIEW! i always found these types of carriers confusing, but the video was helpful and made it look easy.

    • I found them confusing too – but a video of how they are used is really helpful. One of the other carriers in the Babywearing Giveaway Event is the Lil Peeper Keepers. I have their ring sling in linen and with each carrier you get a DVD packed full of video instructions on different ways to use the carrier. Very helpful!

  107. I love the pic of the twins in a moby. the moby is what inspired me to learn more about baby wearing

  108. I love my moby!

  109. I love that picture with the twins – never thought about that.

  110. Wraps intimidate me. :-) I am very petite. I got a Moby to try out but it looked so long! They do look cozy, though.

  111. I bought one of my friends the Moby Wrap for her recent baby, and she LOVES it, I would love to have one for my coming baby too! Right now all I have is a ring sling, and that didn’t work too well when my son was a newborn, but was great for later.

    • I use a ring sling and have since my newest edition was born. I LOVE it! My only complaint which is why I prefer a Moby Wrap for the early days is with his floppy neck his head kept hitting the rings. So I had to use the tail to wrap around the rings to create a pillow.

  112. I love my Moby! They are great. :)

  113. I loved my Moby for my third child and was sad when he outgrew it and I returned it to the person who loaned it to me. Now that I am expecting number 4 it would be awesome to have that wonderful experience all over again!

  114. I loved wraps with my newborn. Intimidating at first but so worthwhile.

  158. This has never been my favorite carrier it takes me to much time when I am in the store and need to throw the baby in it for a feed.

    • I have to admit that at first it was not a favorite of mine either. It took me a good 2-3 weeks to really get how to put it on. It would take me up to 15 minutes to get it on but I kept practicing with a teddy bear and in no time I was down to just a minute to get it on.

  159. I love how snuggly the moby is. Baby and mom can just snuggle right up!!!

  160. I had no Idea you could put two babies in a wrap.

  161. Thanks for the video! I found the Moby confusing at first, too. Videos are helpful!
