Dink or Stink Review: It’s been a long time since I’ve read a ‘young reader’ book. Actually last time was probably when I was a young reader myself. It was a fun read but I have to say I was a little surprised by the opening. A dark and ‘pirate’ opening- not what I really expected but it was for young readers- not pre-schoolers. Besides the opening Curse Of The Bone Pirate: Nui Island Eco-Logical Adventure is still a captivating book, with lessons and learning at every corner. It took about a week for me to read this out loud to my children.
As you read through you will find great lessons. I don’t want to give too much away but I know of one that comes to mind. Two of the characters are walking along hungry and one is just craving the sweets- yum candy! We all do this but one wanted him to try ‘natures candy’. So she climbed up in a tree and threw some figs at him. Of course, sweet and just what he needed at that moment. My kids both perked when I started reading that- “candy!”
Another is the over all lesson in treating our planet correctly- this is what I was really drawn to. The importance of keeping toxins out of the water and the things we eat. I loved how the author works in those things and when there is a ‘different’ word or name B.T. Hope also shows the kids how to pronounce it correctly by having the characters sound it out. What more could you ask for!
I really recommend that your child be at least 9-10 years old before he/she reads this book on their own as it is a little much for younger ones. Although we did have fun reading the book and the kids really enjoyed the pictures as did I. There are not a lot of pictures given we are use to lots of picture books but it’s just the right amount to help your brain put some images of the characters and the events into your mind. Since Curse of the Bone Pirate is the first in the Nui Island Eco-Logical Adventure Series I’m looking forward to more reading and more fun, captivating way that it teaches children to respect their bodies and earth.
Take a few minutes and visit the Nui website- your kids will love it!
Rating 1-10: 7. I gave this a 7 as I really enjoyed that the book put learning about the environment and ways to even eat healthy into a fun manner.
