Healthy Foods To Start Eating
Podcast: Play in new window
While I’ve been working on exercising more I’ve also taken a liking to eating healthy foods. For example, tonight I was SO tempted to take some of the change from the car and turn into the golden arches. I was craving one of those fat-overloaded, calorie-filled juicy burgers that are oh-so-bad for you but taste SO YUMMY!
I avoided that little temptation and thinking as I drove past about how good it would have tasted- oh it was hard. Still, I drove past. That’s the important part. Then I came home and was thinking what could I be doing that would help me eat healthy foods and feel great about it?
What else can I use to fuel the tank? Thankfully some of the foods that I found that are good to eat are ones that I already enjoy. Sure, brusell sprouts are good for you but come on – with that name how can you even try it?
Healthy Fruits to try (besides ‘all of them’)
- Grapefruit
-
This is great to have for breakfast or a snack. Sprinkle some natural cane sugar or sweetener made from the stevia plant and it’s a perfect sweet & tart treat.
- Peaches
-
Typically the cereal topping of choice are strawberries or bananas – try some ripe peaches on your whole grains.
- Grapes
-
As soon as I bring my grapes home I wash them and pull them off the stems. Placed in individual serving reusable containers they make the perfect grab-n-go snack. For a cool treat in the summer try them frozen!
- Strawberries
-
There are a number of fun ways to eat strawberries – from dipping them into cool whip to topping your favorite cereal. I like to make pancakes and top with fresh strawberries, bananas and a little drizzle of Nutella.
Those Healthy Vegetables
- Spinach
-
Try using fresh baby spinach leaves on your sandwiches instead of iceberg lettuce. It’s rich in antioxidents, vitamins, minerals, and it just tastes great!
- Mushrooms
-
These health beauties aren’t just for topping pizza or used in expensive facial treatments. Making a dish that you normally add in high amounts of fatty meats – try reducing the meat and adding in mushrooms instead.
- Asparagus
-
These ‘tall trees’ as my children refer to them are the perfect side dish with your grilled chicken breast. Toss them on the grill then serve with a dash of sea salt.
- Edamame
-
These baby soybeans in the pod make a perfect snack or appetizer. Just steam and serve with a sprinkle of sea salt. You’ll get to eat something fun and your body gets protein and omega-3 fatty acids.
Alarms & H2O
-
We all live busy lives. Many times I’ll go through an entire day not remembering if I ate, when I ate, or even if I went to the bathroom. I know how important water is to losing weight and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. So I programmed alerts into my iCal to remind me a few times a day to drink some H2O and move my body.
Picky Eaters? Get Blending!

A great way of getting fruits and vegetables into your daily diet is combining them all together. Healthy Smoothies give you a serving or two of vegetables that you normally would shy away from eating. You can also hide some of those foods that family members refuse to eat, but you know their body is screaming for them! We have been trying to add a smoothie a day to our diets. The kids love to watch them being made and with the hundreds of different ways to make them – they never get boring!
It’s all about eating right and feeling great – if you can find a fun way to do it (like smoothies!) then that’s all the better!

I’m super proud of u! I haven’t fallen for the burger/fries tmptation in a few months already! Hard when u can smell them every other block!
Keep up with the good job and inspiring so many
Yeah – that’s one reason I’m glad for the cold weather – I can keep my windows rolled up when going by the smelly places and hopefully avoid cravings even more!
I try to eat more fruits and vegetables. The fruit is easier than the vegetables though.
You’re doing such a great job. I’m am tickled for you.
Also, Taste of Home has a healthy cooking magazine you can get for a variety of recipes. Psst…. it’s available online for free.
Thanks for the great tip! Taste of Home is now bookmarked and I found some great recipes that I think even my husband will really enjoy – he’s 100 times more picky of an eater then the kids!

My way of getting more veggies is to always keep a salad going. I do get bagged salad mostly b/c it is less likely to go to waste than a head of romaine or whatever. I throw it in a bowl with shredded carrots. I keep cut up tomatoes in a seperate container so the greens don’t get soggy. That way it’s always available for snacking. I’ve even gotten my DH to go for salad as a snack. If we’re still hungry after a bowl or two of salad then we might try something else.

Amazing healthy food list. I believe that being healthy is not to starve yourself with fad diets or eat only the nutritious food, but its about feeling great, having more energy, and keeping yourself as healthy as possible– all of which can be achieved by learning some nutrition basics and using them in a way that works for you. Thanks for the share.

Hi there! Thanks for the list of those healthy foods, looks yummy, but personally I don’t like mushrooms when I’m still a kid since I grew up in a city but when I started living in my grandfather’s farm I always hunt down mushrooms in the forest and roast them in open fire *lol*

Well, I also try to eat more vegetables and fruits. A few years ago I used to eat mostly meat and spaghetti, now I understand that I was terribly wrong…

Wow, doesn’t it feel great when you get past that temptation to indulge in something delicious but completely unhealthy? Good job. Another fruit I love is nectarines; just like peaches but without the fuzz. Smoothies are also a great idea, along with juicing other fruits and veggies.

Yes, those burgers are really tempting and yummy. But I agree, we should fight temptation and eat healthier for the sake of our health. Fruits and veggies are great for the body.
Hi there,
I have built up a rather large spare tire over the years and lately it has started effecting my lower back.
I have seen the abs king pro being advertised on television and would like to know if it could help me lose a couple of pounds around my waist as to alleviate the excruciating pain.
Thanks,
Jeff

It’s the temptation that gets me. I might do really well for a few days, but then I’ll get tempted or I won’t be so organised in the mornings and find myself having to buy lunch and it all goes out of the window. I wish I could feel great eating great but it doesn’t feel that good.

I love to eat a lot, I usually eat foods that are not healthy.
And later on, I realized that it’s really not good to eat those kinds of foods. So I should eat a lot of nutritious and healthy food so that I can have a very long life.
Excellent idea about the alarms to drink water.
Also good to see you are recommending fruits AND vegetables. Many people eat too much fruit — thinking they are doing the “healthy” thing — but end up taking in way too much sugar and simple carbs. So they gain weight.
We need to eat healthier and not eat so much of the junk. There are lot’s of good tasting nutritious foods out there that we can do a lot with. The food list mentioned above is a great step in making your life a little bit healthier.

I hear that kale is really good for you, too. Although, every time I have had it, I have had it through a juice form. Do you now anything about it and/or how to best make it taste good? After all, it usually is a garnish!
Staying fit will help you make to things a lot better. It also helps you protect from any sickness, it has also antioxidants that help fight cancer or killer disease. For my part,I am picky when it comes to how veggies are cooked, I would love to eat veggie salads. However, I eat a lot of fruit in a day, it’s part of my meals.
Great ideas. The strawberry section made me crave chocolate covered, fresh dipped strawberries (healthy chocolate of course).
[...] Whole colorful food are going to give you the most nutritional value (and are quite tasty) and protein rich foods will help stabilize your blood sugar levels and keep you sustained for longer periods. Hi,
I think you cannot forget oranges, as their high levels of vitamin C and fiber as well as low calories make them perfect for snacks or dinner.
Oh, and natural orange juice is perfect for smoothies!!

Great article! It can be soooooo hard to resist tempting “bad for you” foods. What do you use to make your smoothies? I throw spinach, a bunch of fruit (frozen and fresh) along with protein, and water or juice and it makes a fantastic healthy smoothie. My kids love it and that is so great to know that they are getting such healthy antioxidants. Getting plenty of antioxidant rich foods also helps your skin look radiant.

Grapefruit is a wonderful fruit. I had no idea how many health benefits it had until recently.
Great suggestions! Those who are a little hesitant, especially around the veggies, should really get on the smoothie bandwagon! I like ‘em green–spinach, kale, green apples, green bananas, a lime, or anything else I have in the fridge. A dash of honey at the end, if you like it a little sweeter.
