Harlem Globetrotters 2012 Tour: CONSOL Energy Center {Review}

Posted by in Reviews & Giveaways

We all know the music, the whistles, the spinning, and the classic colors. I can now cross “See the Harlem Globetrotters” off of my bucket list.

The day after Christmas we got to take Hunter and Karter to the CONSOL Energy center for a fun night just the four of us. The boys were very excited and I have to say that I was a little giddy myself. I’ve been to the CONSOL Energy Center but never for an event. Before, I just got to walk around the place while it was empty. Seeing it all lit up, the energy of the people, and the excited squeals of the kids made the whole building seem alive.

Our seats were quite nice and there really isn’t a bad seat in the whole place. Sure there is the classic “nose bleed” section but even that wasn’t that bad. I knew prices at stadiums were high but I really wasn’t expecting $4.50 for just one hot dog. So instead we got a pizza and some popcorn. Hunter ate almost all of the pizza and Karter… well he just watched the show infatuated while eating kernel after kernel.

You'd think he's into the Harlem Globetrotter show or something!

Some of my favorite parts of the show were during the breaks between quarters. We loved “Globie” their mascot that came out and did some fun comedy bits. I could tell the entire audience (me included) really liked the inflatable Globie that danced to some popular music – fell down and got back up again. People around us were laughing hysterically and the boys were doing that squeal thing again.

Honestly, I was a little disappointed that only one of the Harlem players was mic-ed and did the talking parts. I really expected to be able to hear the entire team and how they interacted with each other- similar to the original players. It was just one player that goofed off, sat down in random audience seats, made jokes and picked on the referee.

Another down part was how the ‘show’ ended. They began the night making a big deal about this World Championship trophy and winning it. I had noticed that Karter was doing the wiggly potty dance so I quickly took him to the bathroom which was just steps from our seats. There was two minutes and thirty seconds left in the 4th quarter of the basketball game. As we headed back to our seats people were already leaving – the show was over.

I asked Marty what was going on and he said – “That’s it. It’s over.” Both Karter and I were upset that we didn’t get to see the ending and I was rather surprised that they just ended the game, announced that people could come get autographs and adiós. I really expected some type of comical ceremony at the end as they presented this trophy that was such a big ordeal at the beginning of the game. It really would have been a much better way to end the evening and give it some closure.

'Special K' Goofing Off With Referee

All in all it was a spectacular night. The boys hustled down the very windy and cold street to the van. We had them change into their pajamas and headed off to grandma’s house to pick up Parker. As I went to call grandma to let her know we were on our way I discovered my cell phone was gone. Crapola. I used Marty’s phone to call my mine and a strangers voice answered “CONSOL Energy Center Guest Services“.

Thankfully a good samaritan found my phone and turned it into one of the workers. They let me know that they would only be there for five minutes if I could get back I could get my phone. We took the next exit on 279 and turned around and rushed back to the center. I was really happy that the woman stayed an extra few minutes allowing us to make it back through the traffic.

I really love the new center and will be a happy camper once they have the dome down and the new parking finish. I look forward to upcoming events at the CONSOL Energy Center and thank Pittsburgh Kids Guide for giving us a great family night!
