PM_AprilFCover.qxdI was passing by the magazine stand at our local Giant Eagle and I noticed the very green cover of the April 2009 Pittsburgh Magazine.

It’s title “Best of Green 50+ Ways Pittsburgh is Leading the Eco-lution“. I just had to pick it up. There were the usual suspects – universities, high schools, chem labs, etc doing what they can to turn their facility and production into a green and earth-healthy end result.

You know what I did not see- not a single mom or family that are doing their part at home. None of the recycling drives, sustainable product makers- nothing! I really feel that Pittsburgh Magazine missed out a HUGE way that local families are doing their part. For example- Mary Beth Karchella-MacCumbee of E-a-poo’s spends her days crafting cloth diapers, un-paper towels, cloth menstrual pads, and her latest the green bag specifically for school students. How about the hundreds of mom’s planning on going to this years La Leche League conference for Western PA – I know for a fact that 95% of them don’t use BPA bottles or plastics, use cloth diapers, and just about all of them take an active part in reducing, reusing, and recycling!

I’m glad that Pittsburgh is waking and smelling green, but it’s still a long way from being the top green city. I really do hope that shortly instead of Pittsburgh calling itself “Sixburgh” it will soon be “Greenburgh”!
